Introducing our conductor and musical director, David Healy.
David has taken on roles including leading our training band 'L-Plate Brass' and was Deputy Conductor for over a year with a major role when Algy was side-lined having a knee op. Algy Hoare, founder and inspiration, of Wadhurst Brass Band retired after 60 years at an emotional and celebratory Christmas Concert.
David joined the band when he was about 8, “just because his big sisters were in the band”. Not only does he play trombone – his favourite instrument – but can turn out on euphonium too, and has been known to fill in on cornet, as well as playing the last post at the war memorial on Remembrance Sunday! He is one of those people who just loves the challenge of learning a new instrument and has added the piano to his musical repertoire so that he could play at the wedding of his sister, Wendy!!
Algy has been David’s mentor and guiding force and recently he said;
“It is now time for me to hand over the baton to a very worthy recipient and member of the band, David Healy, a gifted instrumentalist, who has already proved to be an extremely capable conductor this year. He is the right man in the right place. It is very comforting to know that the band will carry on with David’s talent and enthusiasm”.
So with David taking hold of the baton, Algy’s legacy is secure and the band will continue to flourish, entertaining far and wide in East Sussex and West Kent.
