Introducing our new Conductor and Musical Director, Mike West.
Born in Margate Kent, Mike started playing the Tenor Horn aged six but soon changed to Euphonium and Trombone where he had achieved Grade 8 with distinction by the age of 14 and was a member of the Kent County Wind Orchestra.
Mike then decided to give up Euphonium and concentrated on Trombone, quickly establishing himself as first call for many orchestral, Big Band and Brass Band Ensembles. He was a founder member of the 10 piece group Simply Versatile and played for various Brass Bands where he won Soloist awards along with having the honour of playing under conductors such as Walter Hargreaves, Frank Renton, Russel Gray, Melvin White and Nigel Taken.
He was a member of the Canterbury based group that won the Jazz Group of the Year in 1993 and was offered a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. At 18 Mike was coerced into giving up his beloved Trombone to pursue a career as a commercial Trumpet player. Mike has enjoyed a very successful career on trumpet where he has studied under many of the countries leading players and has played for some of the UK’s most prestigious big bands, shows and has had the privilege to be on many recordings, as well as a 5 year period where he worked on board the Cruise liners.
Throughout his time as a Trumpet player Mike has also been in demand as Musical Director for big bands and commercial projects. During his career he has played venues such as The Royal Albert Hall London, Sydney Opera House, The Festival Hall London, The Queen Elizabeth Hall London and The Royal Opera House London and numerous Festivals. Mike is proud to be an endorsed artiste with Eclipse Trumpets where he is endorsed on Trumpet, Flugel, Cornet and Soprano Cornet. Check out their website here: www.eclipsetrumpets.com
